What's up with '70's rock, pop-tinged psychedelia and brightly coloured polyester body shirts anyway? Nothing, as far as Catherine's mark Rew is concerned. I talked to him via a crackling phoneline from his studio come band hang out on a farm just outside of Chicago. Rew attributes Catherine's '70's bent to "Probably growing up in the 70's".

"With Hot Saki we were propagating the sugar pop thing but we have moved on from that point now and people will be surprised  by the direction we're taking from here" Rew vaguely hints at "jungle" but when pressed won't talk about it. He'd prefer to talk about riding trail bikes around the farm.

I admit to him, I know little about the band. I've heard their very pop, guitar based debut album  'Hot Saki and Bedtime Stories' and all the press seems concerned about is that Pumpkins waifster D'Arcy sings on two tracks on the aforementioned album.

The band began in early 1991, they brought out their first single 'sparkle' in December of that year. Co-produced by Brad Wood and Billy Corgan. Their first EP 'Sleepy' was released in 1994 also produced by Billy Corgan. So the links to the Smashing Pumpkins have been eminent since the bands first steps.

"D'Arcy is married to Kerry our drummer, Our studio is on their farm so we see her every day when she is not touring. We wanted a female voice on some tracks, so we asked her. The result is very interesting kind of a Nancy Sinatra, Lee Hazelwood type thing."

How do you feel about the initial response to the album?

"Hot Saki is quite a sweet album. I can see that people would think there is an evil under current, but that could just be the rock sensibility coming through. Guitar based music can be nasty"
