Interview with Gussy

By Renae Kelly & Tristan Brunsdon

Gussy the newest recruit of  Catherine also gave us the chance to delve into his brain for a while. He shares his thoughts on Willy Wonka, Recording and Guiness....

R&T-  What instruments did you end up playing on the new album? Since you joined
the band as a touring keyboardist and percussionist for the 'Hot Saki' tour
and then becoming a permanent member.

G-     Mostly keyboards: piano, organ, samplers...  i also played some
percussion, electronic drums, violin, and guitar

R&T-  Can you describe the sound MFTS has on the new album. Has it changed since
'Hot Saki' because when 'Hot Saki' was released many fans of Catherine's
previous albums were surprised at the change in sound and style.

G-    I think it's changed alot.  I'd say it's quite experimental - namely the
use of computers and other new technology. There's lots of crazy loops
        and samples going on.

R&T- Has the title for the new album been decided yet? At one stage it was going
to be either "My Friend the snake" or "Born Gay". Then MFTS was adopted as
the new band name...much to the surprise of a lot of Catherine fans.

G-   We're still undecided on album title.  I'm not 100% about the band
name... but it's just a name.  It's not that important to me

R&T- The bands Internet mailing list Jade-V at the last count was said to have
107 subscribers. Are you happy that you can have such close contact with
        some of your fans?

G-    I'm really glad there are people out there who appreciate us that much.
It's nice to know there are some faithful folks out there.

R&T- What are your views on the Internet as a whole?

G-    It's good.

R&T- Last year on the list you said any fan that sent their name in would be
thanked in the liner notes of the new album. Will that still be happening?

G-   Only if each person sends me $1,000 U.S. in unmarked small bills.

R&T- Has MFTS shown any of their new material to any labels? If so has there been
much interest or is it too early to say?

G-   Yes. Too early...

R&T- What kind of desk and production equipment do MFTS use for recording and
         mixing?

G-    Two tin cans and a string.

R&T- How did the band like the opportunity to tour Europe last year?

G-    Loved it.  Can't wait to go back.

R&T- Was the atmosphere much different to the shows you play at home?

G-    Fortunately, the atmosphere in Europe is composed mostly of oxygen,
nitrogen, and hydrogen, like in North America.

R&T- What have been some of the more memorable moments you have had since
         joining the band?

G-    Sitting in a little brown room for 10 months, recording this CD.

R&T- What has been your worst ever experience involving the band?

G-    Sitting in a little brown room for 10 months, recording this CD.

R&T- Do you have a band that was especially fun to tour with?

G-    Michelle VanDyke from Hamburg.  Great guys.

R&T- When was the last time you got sick because of alcohol?

G-     I'm pretty sick right now.  The last time i barfed was in London, august
1997 i was drinking guiness all night.

R&T-  Describe your perfect day off?

G-     I'd wake up with my dog and cat in bed with me... then I'd get Kerry and
one of our good friends to go play a few rounds of golf.  We'd go out on
a boat in the afternoon, and drink lots of beer.  Then a limo would pick
us up, and drive us to Chicago for a night at some of my favourite clubs.
I'd pick up some of my best friends in Chicago too.   Then some beautiful
redheaded woman would pick me up... and the rest would be history.

R&T- Who was the last person you fantasised about?

G-    A stripper.

R&T- When was the last time you cried?

G-    The last time i watched Willy wonka's chocolate factory.

R&T- Who is the one person that you look up to?

G-    Well I'm pretty short, so i look up to alot of people.

R&T-  Which is more fun playing live, in the studio or producing?

G-      Live.

R&T-   Do you listen to many other bands in your pastime? If so who?

G-      No, i don't like music.

R&T-   If your new album is successful, will you be considering touring?

G-      I'd insist.

R&T-   What do you consider to be the best word in the world?

G-      Unless.........Thanks Renae and everyone on jade-v,
